For this segment we keep on our diesel theme and head down to the shop floor with Ryan Thompson from Rottler and Matthew Hussey from MSH Machine WORKS to talk about sleeving.
With Matt’s favorite kind of block (the 6.4L Powerstroke) on the CNC behind them being prepped for sleeving, the guys discuss the most common problems they run into, and the tips and tricks for solving them.
From cylinder cavitation to counterbore sleeves with top flanges, Matt drops a whole bunch of knowledge on the new techniques they’re using to solve some of the most persistent problems with diesel engines.
He also dispels a few myths (like you don’t need a torque plate when you’re honing), and shares some great insight on how to get a better sleeve fit and why dry ice is a better and cheaper alternative to setting sleeves than the old, trusty sledge hammer.
Following the shop segment, we head back in studio for a roundtable discussion where Matt and Ryan are joined by show hosts Joe Castello and Lake Speed Jr as well as Dave Bullock from Wilkins Racing Engines and Ryan’s Rottler colleague, Scott Roe.
There they guys dive more into sleeving including how to use it not simply for cylinder repair but engine blueprinting, as well the possibilities opened with the use of different sleeve materials.
