Expo 2024 – Episode 13: Choosing Abrasives for the Right Plateau Hone

This episode is a dive into how to choose and use the right abrasive to get the perfect plateau on your honing work.

Lake Speed Jr heads down to CNC Blockworks’ shop floor where he’s joined by Rottler Manufacturing Application Engineer, Scott Rowe, for a hands-on honing demonstration. The pair begin with a discussion of the application (e.g, are we doing a “grocery getter” or a “crazy diesel”?), and how the hardness of the block will impact the abrasive selection.

They talk about how the amount of fuel that flows through the engine will affect the coarseness of your stone, and why you need to look at Rzk rather than Rvk with your base hone. The guys also show how using a roughness connected to visualization software allows you to see more details about your surface finish than mere numbers can provide.

Finally, the guys show how a cylinder doesn’t wear evenly top to bottom, and how using a vertical hone and stones with more heads will deliver bother roundness and straightness consistently for every cylinder in the engine block.
