Episode 38 – Featured Engine Build: Short Block Engine Assembly (Part 2)

Picking up from where they left off on the featured engine build in episode 30, Lake Speed Jr travels to Jimmy Barton’s hot rod garage to begin final assembly.

During the parts check pre-assembly, the pair run into some problems because of the “tolerance stack” – i.e., they’re using parts from a number of suppliers and need to do some machine work to get them all to fit properly (or as Jimmy says: “Ready to race parts are generally not ready.”)

After watching Lake and Jimmy put the engine together and get it ready to ship to Ben Strader’s EFI University, we head back in studio for a live segment Lake, Joe, and Mark Cronquist to detail why Mark’s been a lifelong user of Precision Product’s performance components.

The segment concludes with LN Engineering to talk about coolant maintenance and what everyone needs to know to ensure long tool and machinery life.

Segment originally aired live on January 13, 2022

Com-on Man, I’ve never seen someone not explain why they started out by grinding the end gap on rings before they ever measured the end gap. Were you just squaring the ends or what, why, and how much did you take off before measuring? Talk to me Lake, talk to me!

Max, These were file to fit rings, so I knew they were going to need to be filed at least .010 to even get remotely close due to the gap required for boost. I apologize for not explaining myself better.
