We head down to the shop floor at Straub Technologies where the AERA’s Chuck Lynch, Rottler Manufacturing’s Ryan Thompson, and Matt Hussey from MSH Machine do a deep dive on what you need to know about surface finishes for modern gaskets.
Chuck breaks down the difference between traditional and modern MLS gaskets, and why the type of gasket, not the metal you’re surfacing is what dictates your surface finish.
Then the guys discuss why these days all engine builders should be investing in a profilometer (“if you’re not measuring, you’re guessing”), and the various techniques they’re using to ensure the gasket maintains the best seal across the entire desk surface.
Finally, the trio shares some of their best tips to get the best surface and seal from your gaskets – from paying attention to Rz more than Ra to check your tooling and machinery, and making sure you’re writing down what you do so you can track the results over time.
A great talk that’s definitely worth listening to a couple of times!
